Let’s face it; Chromebook isn’t making it easy for its users to download popular apps like Kik messenger onto it. As much as it would be optimal to just search for any app and to have it be a one and done click install sequence, we unfortunately find that isn’t the case. So then your quest on Google begins, and you find that each link you click in order to help you solve your dilemma, just leads to an ugly series of download pages.
You don’t know what to click, or where to start, so then you hit the “back” key in hopes of finding a more concise method to finding an outlet that’ll let you install that app you want. Maybe that app in particular, is the KIK messenger app. If that’s why you clicked on this article, then stay tuned because methods for installing KIK on your Chromebook will be mentioned later in the article.
If you’re going to want to use KIK in the first place, it’s probably a good idea to know what KIK is.
Maybe you are a first time user of the KIK messenger app. It could be because a friend without a working cell phone number wants to stay in contact with you outside of a school or work environment, or maybe it’s because you want to meet someone new and form a long-distance relationship. If that’s what your intentions are with this app, then KIK is the right app for you. What KIK provides its users is an outlet for messaging anyone from anywhere in the world who also has a KIK. It’s not only a messaging app though, because users can also play games and watch videos together using this app, which provides another level of potential bond between the multitude of users.
Reasons you may want to access KIK from a Chromebook
There are a number of reasons you may want to access KIK from a Chromebook. There are a number of reasons and scenarios where doing such that would be beneficial.
- You don’t have access to a phone
There are a number of reasons you may find this to be true. Included amongst those reasons are maybe you are in a classroom setting that doesn’t allow for phones to be out in the open, or maybe you find that your phone battery is/ has run out of charge, and you need to find another way to access a chat without enough battery to do so. Luckily for you, you can pull out your handy dandy Chromebook and reply to your messages with ease now.
- You do it for convenience
Maybe you’re in the middle of typing up an important project, or you find yourself browsing the web looking at cat videos. When this is done on a cell phone, this forces the users to go back and forth between apps, because most phones aren’t equipped to let you use two apps simultaneously. However, most laptops and tablets, including the Chromebook, allow you to do just that. Instead of going back and forth between apps, or back and forth between devices, KIK on the Chromebook would allow the users to reply to their friends with ease.
- You prefer to type with an actual keyboard
If you’re anything like me, your thumbs may be too big to hit the keys you need to with proper precision. Because of this, you try to resort to your other fingers. However, you find that trying to pluck letter after letter with 2 fingers is really difficult to do, not to mention, very inefficient. However, maybe you have a decently quick typing speed, and you find that you type on a standard QWERTY keyboard with ease. Maybe if you were to message your friends using a Chromebook outlet, you could not only send messages a lot more quickly, but you remove the frustration that typing on a cell phone may bring.
Now, onto the steps for downloading KIK to your Chromebook.
Regardless your reasoning for wanting to do this, there is a reason you clicked on this link. Now, it’s time to delve into the steps that are needed to download the KIK messenger app to your Chromebook.
Last year, Google came up with a way that let developers make an app, which is available in the Chrome Web Store. This allowed for users to run Android APK through Chrome. The app is called the ARC Welder Tool. What the ARC (also known as the Android Runtime for Chrome) Welder is designed to do is to allow app developers to have an outlet that can let them test their applications. What this means for any Chromebook user is that now, they can use this app not to test their applications, but to use this app in a different way, to install Android applications.
The one issue that may come out of trying to install KIK using the ARC Welder tool is that there are still a few bugs with the app that need to be patched. However, if these bugs are not already patched, they should be soon. If this is the method you would like to use to get KIK on your Chromebook, please follow the steps below, and hopefully it will come out successful. If you want a link to download the ARC Welder Tool, one is provided here.
2. Download Android APK files
If you’re not sure what an APK extension is, it’s the extension that is tied closely to the Android Application. As opposed to going to the Google Play store and then installing the applications, in this instance KIK, right then and there, what you will need to do instead is to download the installation pack separately than you do the actual app. One took that this can be executed on is the Apkmirror tool. What this tool does is it curates .apk files, which covers almost all Android applications. The good thing about this tool is that it is one of the easiest and least risky ways to download any desired Android apps.
After the KIK Messenger app is side loaded onto your Chromebook, what you need to do now is open the ARC Welder Icon, which was the extension app discussed in a previous section. The good thing about this app is that it has a clutter free menu, which makes it easy to use. One of the convenient features of this tool is the “Add your APK” button, which makes your job easy at this point. Whenever you click on the “Add your APK” button, you will then be taken to a file manager, which by now you should see an option for the KIK messenger app amongst any other .apk files you may have added to your list.
4. Configuring ARC Welder
When it comes to configuring and optimizing your app settings, there isn’t much that you have to do. Most of the setting configurations are done automatically, with many already set options and settings taken into account. Some of these settings that are taken into account are orientation (whether it’s landscape or portrait mode), permissions to access Clipboard (for operations such as cut, copy, and paste), as well as Form factor (which scales images from the apps or browsers to fit differently dimensions screens).
5. KIK Messenger is now ready to open!
Now that you have everything in your Chromebook prepared to launch, it is now time to try to launch KIK! All you have to do is simply hit the “Launch App” button and the app will then open in its own window!
Keep in mind that the app may not run flawlessly and that there may be a few glitches with this system, but overall, the functionality and the appearance you get from the app should be strikingly similar!
Alternative methods to the method above.
Maybe the steps listed above are hard to follow, or maybe they simply didn’t work for you. Don’t worry! Solving this issue is luckily not a static issue. This is not a one and done, one solution type issue. Luckily for you, there are multiple applications that can be used to install APK files, and to ultimately implement them. It all depends on your preference of applications.
Maybe you prefer something that syncs automatically, something that doesn’t require too many steps. Or, maybe you prefer something that allows you to customize your settings to your liking. Maybe the number of steps isn’t an issue, but you prefer to follow visual or audio steps as opposed to written out steps. Regardless of your preference, there are links and techniques used to suit all types of instruction followers. The real trick is to find them. If you need any help locating them, the link below provides some good advice and links.
Hopefully after reading this article, you now have successfully installed KIK on your Chromebook! Now, you are able to chat with your friends with ease and convenience! The best part of this technique is that it can also be applied to other android apps! Have fun chatting J
